Trump never promised to end legal immigration. I have been making that point for months. He promised to deport illegal immigrants on the basis that they are criminals. He left the issue of non criminals open.
I agree, but many Trump voters stopped listening after "deport them all" and "they're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats." They tuned out the "legal immigration" part and voted for Trump thinking he was going to round up all the immigrants. (To be fair, lots of Trump haters were equally convinced he was going to round up all the immigrants).
The problem with Trump is that the Trump Image (good and bad) is wildly different than the Trump Reality. Trump is neither Orange Hitler nor America's Savior. And while the Orange Hitler crew will never accept that Trump isn't the Embodiment of Evil, the MAGA team is definitely going to be bitterly disappointed when Trump doesn't live up to their expectations.
Which is my MAGA team needs to get to work making the above non-racial arguments. We need allies against the corporatists.
When I was in high school I was taught that Evil Big Corporations prevented unionization by importing workers from ever more foreign cultures -- by my very liberal US history teacher. Need to revive a once mainstream idea.
I mean, it's easy to 'predict' the eventuality that there will be riffs and chasms and disagreements in ANY organization, much less a political one. What you seem to be attempting is to make hay over this certainty, and blow it up.
Most of us acknowledge there will be differences in everything, that's the very nature of politics.
No I don’t feel cheated. I am not a baby who tantrums when my policy preferences are challenged. Let’s work on getting criminals and parasites out of our country.
I am tired of people who fantasized about a shining knight who would save our country in a few strokes of the pen. How are they different from progressive true believers?
Great writing Kenaz and so relevant to the events of the last week.

This has been the weakness of the anti-immigrant forces for 20 years. Need to review why we have limits on immigration in the first place. The arguments collected here: https://rulesforreactionaries.substack.com/p/the-h-1b-question
And, by the way, Elon Musk backed down and proposed something similar to what I proposed.

Perhaps.

Only the perennially adolescent demand otherwise.
Trump is already on his way to Mars…
